Dr. Seuss Geisel was an American children’s author and cartoonist who is known for writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.

Raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, Geisel was the son of Henrietta (née Seuss) and Theodor Robert Geisel.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925. Geisel adopted the name “Dr. Seuss” as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College and as a graduate student at Lincoln College, Oxford. He left Oxford in 1927 to start his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Vanity Fair, Life, and various other publications.

Geisel died on September 24, 1991, at his home in the La Jolla community of San Diego at the age of 87.
