Who was Gleb Pavlovsky? Ex-Kremlin Adviser Dead at 71

Gleb Olegovich Pavlovsky was a Russian political scientist.

He was born on March 5, 1951, in Odesa, Ukraine to a family of engineers.

Pavlovsky studied history at Odessa University, graduating in 1973.

He had been a dissident in the Soviet era, serving a sentence of internal exile in the Komi Republic in the 1980s.

In 1995, Pavlovsky co-founded the Effective Policy Fund, a political strategy firm that worked on the presidential campaigns of Boris Yeltsin and his successor, Vladimir Putin.

From 1996 to 2011, Gleb Pavlovsky worked with Vladimir Putin as a Kremlin adviser and political strategist in Putin’s initial tenure as president and prime minister.

However, following his dismissal from the presidential administration in 2011, he became a critic of the Kremlin.

Between 2005 and 2008, Pavlovsky hosted the weekly television news commentary “Real Politics”, on NTV Russia. In 2012, he became editor-in-chief of Gefter.ru, a Russian-language blog.

He contributed opinion pieces to The Moscow Times from 2015-2019.

Gleb Pavlovsky died on February 27, 2023, at age 71 in Moscow, Russia.
