On November 24, 2016, Karl Robinson was chosen to replace Russell Slade as the head coach of Charlton Athletic. Beginning on November 28, 2016, he assumed complete control of the club. He did, however, leave the club voluntarily in March 2018.

On March 22, 2018, the same day he left Charlton Athletic, Robinson was named the new head coach of League One team Oxford United. He agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract, which was then extended in August 2019 until 2022. Oxford United came in at number twelve in his first season in charge.
Robinson was accused by the Football Association of abusing a match official in December 2019. Oxford United finished the league season in fourth place overall based on average points scored per game despite the COVID-affected 2019–20 season.

They competed in the play-off final, but Wycombe Wanderers defeated them 2-1. The season after, Oxford United once more qualified for the playoffs and placed sixth in League One, however, they fell to Blackpool in the opening round of the playoffs with a 6-3 overall score.
