Shamima Begum is a British citizen born on August 25, 1999. She traveled to Syria at the age of 15 to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

In February 2015, she and two classmates from Bethnal Green Academy in London, who later came to be known as the Bethnal Green trio, traveled to Syria.
Ten days after arriving, Begum was married to another ISIL member, and she gave birth to three children who all passed away at an early age.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Begum had become known among ISIL members as an enforcer and had made efforts to enlist other young ladies.

Begum was born in England to immigrant parents who were both nationals of Bangladesh. She was brought up as a Muslim in East London’s Bethnal Green neighborhood of Tower Hamlets.
The name of her mother is Asma Begum and her father is Ahmed Ali. She has a sibling.
