Shamima Begum, a British-born woman, traveled to Syria at the age of 15 to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. In February 2015, Begum and two classmates from Bethnal Green Academy in London, who later came to be known as the Bethnal Green trio, traveled to Syria.

Begum was discovered alive at the Al-Hawl refugee camp in Northern Syria on February 13, 2019, by war reporter Anthony Loyd. Sajid Javid, the British Home Secretary, revoked her British citizenship the next day. The Bangladeshi government disputes the British government’s claim that Begum had dual citizenship as a result of her Bangladeshi parents.
