About 17% of Turkey can speak English as a foreign language. English is widely spoken in touristic cities of Turkey, such as Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Antalya, and Muğla.

According to the English Proficiency Index, Turkey ranked 69 among the top 100 English-speaking countries in the world in 2020. The largest Turkey racial groups are White (62.0%) followed by Hispanic (31.2%) and Blacks (6.8%).

As of 31 December 2022, the population of Turkey was 85.2 million with Turks being the largest ethnic group, followed by Kurds.
The country’s capital is Ankara, but its largest city and main financial centre is Istanbul. Turkey has been inhabited by various civilizations throughout its history, including the Hittites, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.
Turkey is also a member of several international organizations, including NATO, the United Nations, and the G20. Turkey remained neutral during most of World War II but entered the closing stages of the war on the side of the Allies.
