Who Was Eileen Sheridan? Legendary cycling record-breaker dead at 99

Legendary cyclist Eileen Sheridan passed away on February 13, 2023, in Coventry, United Kingdom. She was aged 99.

Born in 1923, Sheridan began competitive cycling after World War II.

She turned pro in 1951 and signed a three-year deal with a cycle manufacturer, after which she broke 21 records set by the Road Records Association.

Sheridan was named “Greatest British Cyclist” by the Cycling Weekly magazine.

One of Sheridan’s notable achievement was breaking the LEJOG (Land’s End to John o’ Groats) record in 1954. She had held the record for more than three decades and earned the nickname “Mighty Atom”.

Sheridan was featured in a 1952 documentary film titled Spinning Wheels: Cycle Sport ’50s Style.

She also appeared in TV commercials for Player’s cigarettes.

Sheridan was a Life Member and President of the Coventry Cycling Club, and Vice President of Roads Records Association.
