The last major earthquake in Turkey happened in January 2020, when an earthquake with magnitude 6.7 hit Istanbul and killed no less than 18,000 people.

At least seven quakes with magnitude of at least 7.0 have hit Turkey in the last 25 years.

At least 4,800 people have died, and 5,775 buildings have collapsed.

The government of Turkey has deployed over 24,400 search and rescue operatives, with more being added on a daily basis.

Although the current cold weather with a temperature of about -5 C (23 F), had posed difficulty in the rescue mission, yet scores of helicopters have not stopped transporting emergency aid and food.

Other provinces that were affected include Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, Idlib and Tartous.
