Robert Walpole was a British statesman and former Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the Leader of the House of Commons, and considered the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain. He was impeached by the House of Commons and found guilty by the House of the Lords.

After his judgment, he was sentenced and imprisoned in the Tower of London for six months and expelled from parliament.

Why did Walpole fall from power?
Robert Walpole was impeached and imprisoned after he was found guilty of a high breach of trust, and notorious corruption. His corruption charges were heavily based on the fact that he was the First Lord of the Treasury. However, he was not an enemy to all, and even some members of the Whig still kept close contacts with him. He was often visited by all the Whig leaders and was considered a political martyr. He was a member of the Whig Party.
