Why was Robert Walpole important?
Robert Walpole was a very significant figure in the British political space for several decades. He was the First Lord of the Treasury for over two decades, a position he served for more than the assigned duration. He was arguably the most influential British politician during his time.
He sustained power for the Whig Party and established Downing Street as the home of the Prime Minister, and also won favor with the Crown and negotiated with great skills and panache. Even after he was imprisoned for corruption, all leaders of the Whig Party still visited him in the Tower.
