Marshall first appeared in a television commercial for Head and Shoulders beautifying shampoo. She was hired to play a girl with stringy, unattractive hair, and Farrah Fawcett was hired to play a girl with thick, bouncy hair.

In 2010 and 2011, Marshall directed two episodes of the Showtime series United States of Tara. Women of Vision Award in 2013. Marshall planned on developing a biopic on Effa Manley, but it never materialised.

Marshall has received several Golden Globe nominations in the Best Performance in a Television Series category, was nominated for a Saturn Award for her directing work and a lifetime creative achievement award at the American Comedy Awards.
