Anita Baker was born in Toledo Ohio. The names of her parents are unknown. When she was two, her mother abandoned her and she was raised by a foster family in Detroit, Michigan.

When she was 12, her foster parents died and her foster sister raised her afterwards.By the time Baker was 16, she began singing R& B at Detroit nightclubs.

Baker’s most important work in her career was the album, Rapture which sold more than eight million copies. Baker also won two Grammy Awards in recognition of her efforts for that album.
In 1991, Baker won the Grammy for the Awards for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for Composition.
In 1996, she also won the Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the song “I apologize”.
