Patti Smith is an American singer, songwriter, poet, painter, and author best known as an iconic part of the New York City punk rock movement.

Patricia Lee Smith was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America. Patti Smith graduated from Deptford Township High School in 1964 and in 1967, Smith left Glassboro State College, relocating to Manhattan in New York City.

In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. In 2007, Patti Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Patti Smith received an honorary doctorate degree for her contributions to popular culture at the 2008 Rowan Commencement ceremony. Patti Smith was also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.
