He was born to a Jewish family in Denville, New Jersey and began studying the piano at an ealy age.

In middle school, he switched to the saxophone.

He switched again to the guitar at adolescence after he heard the Rolling Stones’ “19th Nervous Breakdown.”

After settling on the guitar as his primary instrument, he embarked on an extended period of examination to develop a personal style.

He formed Neon with his school mate Richard Hell and recruited drummer Billy Ficca.

Sadly, The Neon Boys quickly disbanded after their inability to recruit a second guitarist.

The Neon Boys reformed as Television a few months later, finding a guitarist in Richard Lloyd, and began playing at seminal punk clubs like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City.
