Gregory Allen Howard is best known for penning the screenplay for the Disney film Remember the Titans (2000), about an undefeated high school football team credited with bridging the racial divide in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971.

Developing the screenplay for the movie made him the first African American screenwriter to script a $100 million drama, and the only African American screenwriter in film history to write a $100 million spec script.

In 2019, Howard brought to life a story he was deeply invested in, Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet, for which he wrote the screenplay and produced. The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Howard was working on several projects, including The Magician, a biopic about quarterback Marlin “The Magician” Briscoe before his death.

Gregory Allen Howard died in Miami, Florida on January 27, 2023, at the age of 70 after a brief illness, according to his publicist.
