Donald Trelford was confirmed dead on the morning of 27th January 2023 in Majorca, where he had lived for more than ten years, according to his wife Claire. It is believed that Donald Trelford suffered illness for a long time before he eventually died.

During Mr. Trelford’s 18 years as editor of The Observer, the daily garnered various press honors, including newspaper of the year. In 1984, he was named international editor of the year.
