Designed by legendary course architect William P. Bell and completed by his son, William F. Bell, Torrey Pines opened in 1957.

The Torrey Pines Golf Course is named after the Torrey Pine trees that are native to the area and are prominent throughout the course.
The North and South courses are both 18-hole layouts that were designed by William F. Bell, and the South course is home to the annual Farmers Insurance Open, a PGA Tour event.
More than 80,000 rounds annually are played on the North Course alone, while the South receives 60,000. Torrey Pines Golf Course is considered one of the best public golf courses in the United States.
The course features bentgrass greens, Kikuyu fairways, and roughs, and is known for its challenging greens, tight fairways, and deep bunkers.
