When Did Triple J Hottest 100 Start?

Triple J Hottest 100 began in 1988, after its producer Lawrie Zion thought about creating a listener poll for what seemed like the fan-favourite songs of all time.

The first band to win at the polls was Joy Division with their hit song Love Will Tear Us Apart.

About Triple J Hottest 100

Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual voting of the most popular songs of the year done by “listeners of Australian radio station Triple J.”

Listeners are allowed to vote for their top 10 songs.

Indie rock band Spacey Jane had won the Hottest 100 Triple J album in 2022, winning the poll for the second time, after their debut song Sunlight in won the poll in 2020.

The next Triple J Hottest 100 will be announced on January 28, 2023, and it will be its 30th edition. Usually, the station will play the Hottest 200 songs a day before the poll.

In 2023, the votes between the top two songs were less than 125, with the Australian rock band Gang of Youths ranking tops with their song “In the Wake of Your Leave”.

“Following hard from behind comes “Hardlight” by Spacey Jane and “Stars in My Eyes” by the pop rock band Ball Park Music from Brisbane.

Funds derived from the voting event is often used to support the Australian Conservation Foundation.
