Lead, usually used in the form of lead tetroxide, is no longer used anymore and all Swarovski Crystal glass produced since 2012 has been lead-free. The lead in the Swarovski crystal gives the jewellery item sparkle and brilliance.

Swarovski crystal is harder than standard glass but is susceptible to scratches as it has a Mohs hardness of between 6-7.
