Who is M&M owned by?

M&M’s are multicoloured button-shaped chocolates that are the flagship product of Mars, Incorporated’s Mars Wrigley Confectionery division.

M&M’s were created in the United States in 1941 and have been sold in over 100 countries since 2003.

During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, Forrest Mars Sr., son of Mars Company founder Frank C. Mars, saw soldiers eating British-made Smarties, chocolate pellets with a coloured shell surrounding the outside, preventing the sweets (candies) from melting.

On March 3, 1941, Mars received a patent for his process. Production started in 1941 at 285 Badger Avenue in Clinton Hill, Newark, New Jersey. M&M Limited was the name of the company when it was founded.

They come in a variety of colours, some of which have evolved. The original candy has a semi-sweet chocolate filling that, when other variations were introduced, was branded as the “plain, normal” variety.

Peanut M&M’s, which consist of a peanut coated in milk chocolate and then encased in a candy shell, were the first variation introduced and are still available.

Numerous other variations have been introduced, some of which are commonplace (peanut butter, almond, pretzel, crispy, dark chocolate, and caramel), while others are seasonal or geographically limited.
