Twilight: Is Edward abusive to Bella? Why does Edward leave Bella?

During the course of the entire Twilight Saga movie series, Edward has not been portrayed as being abusive towards Bella.

Edward leaves Bella Swan in the New Moon movie because he feels that his presence in her life is putting her at risk because of his vampire nature and lack of sufficient control himself around her.

Also, Edward left Bella to protect her because he believes that the Volturi will come after her if he continues to associate with her.
