Arthur Ravenel Jr. graduated from the College of Charleston with a bachelor of science degree. He worked as a realtor and general contractor.
From 1953 to 1959, he was a Democratic member of the South Carolina House of Representatives.
Arthur Ravenel Jr. switched to the Republican Party in the early 1960s and ran for office several times.
Arthur Ravenel Jr. ran unsuccessfully for the South Carolina State Senate three times (1962, 1974, and 1976), the United States House of Representatives (in a 1971 special election), and the mayorship of Charleston (also 1971).
