Beaton was part of Blue Magic from the beginning, and was pivotal in growing the group into one of the all-time great Philly soul vocal groups.
Formed by Temple University student Mills with some friends, the group scored an early hit with Mills’ composition “Spell.”

When the other members who participated in the recording balked at touring, Mills merged with local band Shades of Love (Beaton, Vernon Sawyer, Wendell Sawyer, and Richard Pratt) to form the nucleus of Blue Magic that would top the charts for years to come.

Original members included:
- Ted Wizard Mills – lead tenor
- Wendell Sawyer – baritone, lead
- Keith “Duke” Beaton – tenor
- Richard Pratt – bass and
- Vernon Sawyer- tenor
By 1977, the group’s popularity faded.
This was due to the rise of disco and changing music styles.
Though the group continuing to record consistently they failed to chart.
Subsequent label moves to Capitol Records for a reunion with Norman Harris (who had left two years earlier) and then the smaller label Mirage resulted in some smaller R&B charting, but the group didn’t achieve any major success.
