Who shot Martin Luther King’s mother?

Martin Luther King Jr.’s mother, Alberta Williams King, was shot and killed on June 30, 1974, at the age of 69.

The person responsible for her death was Marcus Chenault, a 23-year-old African American who was associated with a Black nationalist group.

Marcus Chenault entered the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, where King’s mother was playing the organ during a Sunday morning service.

He approached her and shot her once in the back of the head and twice in the chest with a handgun.

Marcus Chenault then turned the gun on two other people in the church, but they were not killed. Chenault was tackled by congregants and subdued until the police arrived.

Marcus Chenault was arrested and charged with murder. He was later found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

He claimed that he had targeted King’s mother because he believed that she and other Black leaders were “not black enough” and that they were ” Uncle Toms’s’s.”

This crime was a tragic event for the King family and the African American community, who lost a matriarchal figure, who was loved and respected by many.
