Evel Knievel was never paralyzed. Over the course of his career, Evel Knievel attempted more than 75 ramp-to-ramp motorcycle jumps and suffered numerous injuries, including broken bones.

Evel Knievel sustained the injuries when he lost control of his motorcycle upon landing a practice run for a planned jump over a pool containing 13 sharks.

Growing up in Butte, Montana, Knievel had a tumultuous youth and was often arrested for stealing hubcaps and motorcycles. However, this led to a passion for motorcycle riding and he began performing stunts in his early 20s.
Evel Knievel’s career took off in the 1960s and 1970s when he began attempting and completing increasingly dangerous stunts, such as jumping over cars and fountains. He even attempted to jump across the Snake River Canyon in Idaho, though the stunt was ultimately unsuccessful.
Evel Knievel died on November 30, 2007, in Clearwater, Florida, United States of pulmonary disease at the age of 69.
