“Uncut Gems” is not based on a specific person. The film’s characters and events are fictional, created by the writers Ronald Bronstein and the Safdie brothers.

However, the filmmakers drew inspiration from different sources and people who share similarities with the protagonist, Howard Ratner.
The Safdie brothers have said that they wanted to create a character who was a representation of the “American Dream” gone wrong.
Howard’s character is a composite of several people the brothers have met over the years, including Jewish American jewellers in New York City who deal with high-end precious stones, and a jeweller in New York City who was involved in underground gambling.
The Safdies also drew inspiration from the world of high-end jewellery and the culture of gambling to create the film’s unique setting and atmosphere.
