Born on January 21, 1986, in Conway, Arkansas, Hillis played high school football at Conway High School, and college football at the University of Arkansas.

In 2008, he was drafted by the Denver Broncos as 227th overall pick in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

After two seasons with the Broncos, Hillis went ahead to play for the Cleveland Browns, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the New York Giants.
