James Norton is diabetic. Norton has type 1 diabetes. In 2015, he was appointed as a trustee of the Royal Theatrical Support Trust.

James Norton earned a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2015 for his performance as ex-convict Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley.
While attending Cambridge, James Norton was a member of The Marlowe Society theatre club and played Posthumus in a production of Cymbeline directed by Trevor Nunn. He then attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London for three years but left in 2010 before graduating to take an acting assignment.
James Norton also had a role in the Doctor Who episode “Cold War” and was praised for his portrayal of Tommy Lee Royce in the crime drama Happy Valley.
