James Norton’s father Hugh Biddulph Norton’s dad, Ian Norton, MBE, was a colonial official in Tanganyika. He is also the grandson of Hugh Ross Norton, OBE, Archdeacon of Sudbury.
Hugh Biddulph Norton’s mother, Jean, was the daughter of Colonel Francis John Biddulph of the Royal Engineers. The Biddulph family was a branch of an Irish landed gentry.

James Geoffrey Ian Norton was raised in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. Norton’s family lived in the town of Malton, at the edge of the Howardian Hills. Norton completed work experience at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough at age 15.
James Norton attended Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he studied theology and graduated with First Class Honours in 2007. While attending Cambridge, Norton was a member of The Marlowe Society theatre club.
James Norton appeared in several films, including Cheerful Weather for the Wedding, Rush, and Belle.
