Patrick Hogan Obituary

Sir Patrick Hogan KNZM CBE was a Cambridge-based Thoroughbred racehorse breeder from New Zealand. Sir Patrick Hogan died in January 2023 at 83 after being ill for some time.

Hogan was born on October 23, 1939, in Rotorua. He attended Hautapu Primary School and St. Patrick’s College in Silverstream.

From 1965 to 1977, Hogan was a partner in the Fancourt Stud, and in 1977, he founded the Cambridge Stud with the outstanding sire Sir Tristram.

Hogan served as the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s chairman and vice-president, as well as the Cambridge Jockey Club’s president.

He rose to prominence as the owner of champion sires Sir Tristram and Zabeel and a champion racehorse owner. In the year 2000, he was knighted.

Sir Patrick Hogan was named “the most interesting and influential figure in racing in the last 25 years” by racing journalist David McCarthy in 2007.
