According to a spokesperson, he was killed by a SWAT team member after brandishing a gun in his doorway while police were responding to an incident in which Capps allegedly held his wife and adult stepdaughter hostage at gunpoint.

The death shocked many people in the local music community. Capps came from a well-known Nashville family; he was the son of Jimmy Capps, a legendary session player, Grand Ole Opry guitarist, and Musicians Hall of Fame member who died in 2020.

At the time of his death, Capps was wanted on aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping warrants.

Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters that Capps held his 60-year-old wife and 23-year-old stepdaughter at gunpoint in their family room around 3 a.m. and threatened to kill them if they called anyone.

They were terrified of him and his actions toward them in refusing to let them leave.” According to police, the two women escaped after he fell asleep around dawn and went to the Hermitage precinct to file a report. Shortly after the warrants were issued at 1:55 p.m., the SWAT team confronted and killed him.
