Gregg Berhalter, head coach of the United States men’s national team, shared a statement on Tuesday, January 3 2023, revealing a “physical” altercation with his girlfriend and now-wife Rosalind in the past in response to an alleged blackmail attempt during the World Cup in Qatar.

In a statement shared on Twitter, Berhalter wrote that a few months into his relationship with Rosalind, while in college at the University of North Carolina, they were “out drinking at a local bar” when they “had a heated argument that continued outside. It became physical and I kicked her in the legs,” Berhalter wrote.
“There are zero excuses for my actions that night; it was a shameful moment and one that I regret to this day,” Berhalter continued.

Berhalter wrote that seven months later, Rosalind called him and they rebuilt their relationship. They have since lived together for almost three decades, raised four children and recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
U.S. Soccer stated that it immediately hired the Alston & Bird law firm “to conduct an independent investigation into the matter” after learning of the allegation eight days after the USMNT’s World Cup elimination in December 2022.
