Lawrence Kohlberg married Lucille Stigberg in 1955 while beginning his dissertation. The couple had two sons, David and Steven.

Lawrence Kohlberg was born on October 25, 1927, in Bronxville, New York, and grew up in Brooklyn.  Kohlberg was the youngest of four children of Alfred Kohlberg and of his second wife, Charlotte Albrecht.

Lawrence Kohlberg began his career as a professor at the University of Chicago, where he taught and conducted research on moral development.

Lawrence Kohlberg conducted extensive research with children and adolescents, using moral dilemmas to study the stages of moral development.

In addition to his work as a researcher and professor, Lawrence Kohlberg also served as a consultant for various organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education and the World Health Organization.

Lawrence Kohlberg passed away on January 19, 1987, at the age of 59. Kohlberg was found to be the 30th most eminent psychologist of the 20th century in an empirical study using six criteria.
