As of 2014, Joan Lunden is a special correspondent for NBC’s Today. In 2021, Lunden took over as host of the public television program Second Opinion.  Lunden became popular on GMA and was promoted to co-host with David Hartman in 1980.

As co-host of GMA, Joan Lunden travelled extensively and covered a range of historical events, including the 50th anniversary of VE Day in 1995, the 50th anniversary of D-Day, the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo and Calgary, and the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Joan Lunden is an advocate for breast cancer awareness and a public speaker on the topic. She has received several honours and awards, including the Spirit of Achievement Award from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the National Women’s Political Caucus Award, the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights Award, the Baylor University Outstanding Woman of the Year award, and the YWCA Outstanding Woman’s Award.
