The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by John O’Brien. In the film, Cage plays Ben Sanderson, an alcoholic screenwriter who travels to Las Vegas to drink himself to death.

Shue plays Sera, a prostitute who forms a relationship with Ben as he descends into alcoholism. The film was a critical and commercial success and received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Cage and Best Actress for Shue.

“Leaving Las Vegas” was also the debut film for O’Brien, who committed suicide shortly after the film’s release.

Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth Shue both deliver strong performances as the two lead characters, and the film features some striking cinematography and a raw, emotionally charged atmosphere.

The film deals with heavy themes such as addiction, loneliness, and the search for meaning in life, and it may not be suitable for all viewers due to its mature subject matter.
