In 1982, Morrissey and Johnny Marr started the Smiths, which quickly gained popularity thanks to their self-titled debut album. Morrissey gained notoriety as the band’s frontman because of his distinctive quiff and sharp, satirical songs.
Morrissey’s music is distinguished by his baritone voice and unusual lyrics with reoccurring themes of emotional solitude, sexual longing, self-deprecating and dark humor, and anti-establishment attitudes.
Morrissey was ranked as the second-greatest living British cultural icon in a 2006 survey for the BBC’s Culture Show.
