Tory Lanez was born on July 27, 1992, in Brampton, Ontario, to Sonstar, a Bajan father, and Luella, a Curaçao mother. The family lived in Montreal before relocating to Miami, Florida.

After his mother died, his father began working as an ordained minister and missionary, which required them both to travel extensively throughout the United States.

Tory Lanez’s father later remarried, and the family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where Daystar met his janitor friend Hakeem.

Because of his behaviour issues, he was sent to live with his cousin Dahir Abib, Orane Forrest, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, in 2006. Daystar was then forced to relocate to Toronto with his grandmother.

He was on his own at the age of 15 because she refused to care for him. “I ended up moving downtown with three guys I didn’t really know.

“When I first entered the house, I had no idea how things worked. I was just fighting them from the age of fifteen to eighteen. Everyone was out for himself.2

“Having to fend for myself and being in a situation where there is no father, grandmother, or mother to help you is what made me a man.” “It shaped the person I am today,” he says.

He then began rapping again, giving himself the nickname Notorious. He dropped out of tenth grade at the age of sixteen and began performing songs at outdoor concerts.
