Mary Berry’s 19-year-old son William was killed in a car accident on his way home from university in 1989.
Mary described her final moments with her son as beginning on a “glorious January day.” She stated in her documentary that she wanted to make her son’s favourite while he was home from school.
“He hadn’t been home for a few weekends, so I thought I’d do roast lamb because it’s his favourite,” she said (per Hello! magazine).

“I can remember Will walking through the door on that Friday night and asking, ‘Mum, who’s coming?’ And I said, ‘It’s for you, it’s so lovely to have you home, and Annabel is here and Tom too.’ So we had a nice family meal.

Mary Berry’s daughter Annabel Hunnings is a professionally trained chef who started her own business in the 1990s with her mother Mary, making salad dressings, chutneys, and sauces.
Thomas Hunnings, the firstborn son, works as a tree surgeon in Oxfordshire. She has five grandchildren as well.
