Worzel Gummidge is a British TV fantasy series, adapted from the Worzel Gummidge books written by Barbara Euphan Todd.

The series had Jon Pertwee playing the role of the titular scarecrow and Una Stubbs appearing as Aunt Sally.

Four of the thirty-one parts of the series were aired in the UK from 1979 to 1981, and as of 2013, the show still ranked tops on the list of the greatest British children’s programmes.

The series follows the story of Worzel Gummidge, a scarecrow who might come to life and visit the village of Scatterbrook.

He had two friends named John and Sue who also happen to be siblings. They frequently helped him in cleaning up his mess.

Worzel was known for his variety of interchangeable turnip, mangelwurzel, and swede heads, that he used for various occasions and for his own dialect, Worzelese.

He is portrayed to be deeply in love with Aunt Sally, a cruel-hearted coconut-shy doll, who thinks the common scarecrow Worzel isn’t good enough for her.

Sally begins to manipulate Worzel for her own benefits and is constantly being nasty to him.

Sally is eventually bought by a New Zealand museum curator, and Worzel follows her into the luggage chute.
