Born March 17, 1994, in Waianae, Hawaii, USA, Buckner played football and became a four-star recruit at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, and had a successful collegiate career playing for the University of Oregon.

In his freshman year at Oregon, Buckner played in all 13 games and finished with 29 tackles, 2.5 for a loss, and 1.0 sack. In his sophomore year, Buckner made 39 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, and 2.5 sacks.

In 2016, he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers as 7th overall pick, in the first round of the NFL Draft, and was named to his first Pro Bowl and a second-team All-Pro while he was with the 49ers.
