Ari Aster is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer.

He was born on July 15, 1986 in New York, United States to a Jewish family.
His father was a musician and his mother was a poet.
Aster’s family lived in England, where his father opened a jazz nightclub in Chester. At age 10, the family relocated to New Mexico, United States where he spent his teen years.

Aster studied at the College of Santa Fe, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film in 2008. He then received an MFA in directing from AFI Conservatory in 2010.

Aster’s debut film was the short film The Strange Thing About the Johnsons in 2011. He has since written and directed several films including Hereditary (2018), Midsommar (2019), C’est La Vie (2016), The Turtle’s Head (2014), Basically (2014), Munchausen (2013), Herman’s Cure-All Tonic (2008), Los Huesos (2021), Beau Is Afraid (2023), and many others.
