Her father, Nigel Lawson, is a business and finance journalist who later became a Conservative MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer in Margaret Thatcher’s government.

Nigella Lawson’s mother was a socialite and the heiress to the J. Lyons and Co. fortune. She is of Jewish descent on both parents’ sides. Nigel and Vanessa Lawson were married from 1936 to 1985 when Nigella was 20 years. The couple moved on and remarried Therese Maclear and philosopher A. J. Ayer respectively.
