Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Tage Thompson grew up playing ice hockey. He played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program before committing to the University of Connecticut to play college hockey.

While at the University of Connecticut, Tage Thompson appeared in all 36 games during his freshman season at UConn in 2015–16. He was second on the team with 32 points on 14 goals and 18 assists.
