The name “Sticks” was given to Jalen Smith by his amateur team coach as the coach was on a mission of nicknaming all his team members. Due to the slimness of Jalen Smith, he was given the name “Sticks” by his coach called Mark Turgeon.

Jalen Smith played high school basketball for Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Maryland, and played college basketball for the Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team at the University of Maryland.
