Josh Hart was born on March 6, 1995, in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States to Moses and Pat Hart. He is a brother to Moses Joseph Hart and Aimee Hart and also the great-nephew of Elston Howard, a professional baseball player who was a catcher and a left fielder.

Hart represented Villanova in collegiate basketball. Coaches predicted Hart’s Wildcats to win the Big East heading into his senior year, and he was voted Preseason Player of the Year. On November 2, 2016, he was selected for the Associated Press preseason All-America team.

The Utah Jazz selected him in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft with the 30th overall pick before being traded on draft night to the Los Angeles Lakers.
