Ashley Bickerton was a contemporary American artist of Barbadian origin. Bickerton was born in Barbados on May 26, 1959, the son of Derek Bickerton, a linguist and scholar of Creole and pidgin languages.

Ashley Bickerton grew up in a variety of countries on four continents. Bickerton, who was born in the United Kingdom, became a naturalized American citizen in the mid-1980s.
He spent 12 years in New York City, where he established his career, before relocating to Bali in 1993.
Bickerton, a mixed-media artist, frequently mixed photographic and painterly elements with industrial and found object assemblages. He is associated with the Neo-Geo art movement of the early 1980s.

Bickerton rose to prominence in the 1980s for a beguiling body of work that parodied consumerist impulses.
He even created his own brand, SUSIE (full name: Susie Culturelux), which he claimed would serve as a “Index/Name Brand/Artistic Signature” for future art historians.
Ashley Bickerton died on Wednesday, November 30 2022, at the age of 63 in Bali, Indonesia. He was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, last year, which affects the nervous system and can be debilitating.
