Jiang Zemin Cause of Death

Jiang Zemin, the Chinese communist leader who paved the way for the country’s emergence as a global superpower, died Wednesday, 30 November 2022, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. He was 96.

Jiang Zemin died of leukemia and multiple organ failure. Jiang Zemin, is survived by his wife, two sons, and two grandchildren.

Jiang rose to the position of party leader in the aftermath of the 1989 student-led Tiananmen Square protests.

China was a pariah state. Jiang was tasked with reuniting a fractured Communist Party and repairing the image of a government that had ordered the military to fire on its own citizens.

Following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, China successfully reintegrated itself into the international community by regaining sovereignty over Hong Kong, winning the bid to host the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and, perhaps most importantly, joining the World Trade Organization.

For 15 years, Jiang was a divisive and colorful figure at the forefront of political life. Analysts say he retained influence even after retirement, and in his final years served as a counterweight to China’s current leader, Xi Jinping.
