Shazier suffered a spinal contusion during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017. After a tackle,  Ryan Shazier collapsed and was helped off the field.

The hit resulted in him becoming a paraplegic and requiring spinal stabilization surgery and learning to walk again.

Ryan Shazier is no longer paralyzed. Shazier walked into the 2018 NFL draft just one year after his fateful tackle, accompanied by his now-wife, Michelle Rodriguez.

Shazier told Strahan on GMA that the draft was the furthest he had walked without his cane, describing the experience as “scary” and “exciting.”

According to Steelers linebacker coach Joey Porter, Shazier jogged for the first time since his spinal stabilization surgery on November 30, 2018.

Shazier announced his retirement from football in 2020 after spending two seasons on the Steelers’ physically unable to perform list.
