What Happened To Dame Clare Marx? How Did Dame Clare Max Die?

Renowned British surgeon Dame Clare Lucy Marx has died. Clare was born on March 1954 and died in November 2022. She was 68 years.

Clare Marx died of pancreatic cancer.

Prior to her death, she served in many vital roles in the Bristish healthcare delivery system.

She was:

• President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from July 2014 to July 2017, the first woman to hold the position,
• Former chair of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management and the
• Chair of the General Medical Council, from January 2019 through July 2021, the first woman to hold this role.

She also worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust from 1993.

In 2021, she announced her resignation from the GMC after she was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer.

Perhaps her little bit of controversy came after Ehgland exited the European Union in the June 2016 referendum.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph Marx posited that Brexit was an opportunity to improve safety standards in the NHS by strengthening medical device legislation and language testing for non-British workers.

At the time, she felt the European Working Time Directive which restricts working hours in the NHS needed to be relaxed to enable more hours of training.

However, The Royal College of Surgeons of England later sent out a press release clarifying that they did not endorse a return to excessive hours for NHS workers.
