Ryan Reaves is the son of Willard Reaves who is an American-Canadian former professional American football running back who played for the Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Washington Redskins, and the Miami Dolphins.

Ryan Reaves developed an interest in hockey at a very young age and at around 13 years, he played in the 2000 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament as a member of the Winnipeg South Monarchs minor ice hockey team.

Ryan Reaves is from a family of sports lovers and he has walked down the sporting lineage of his family.
